Cheddar Gorge

The Cheddar Gorge is a naturally formed gorge with caves and limestone cliffs near Cheddar village in Somerset.

The gorge is lined with sheer, craggy limestone cliffs and is around 3 miles long and 400 feet deep and was formed during the last Ice Age. A number of caves systems have been formed in the gorge by the Cheddar Yeo river which runs underground. Two of the caves open to the public are Gough's cave and Cox's cave.

Visitors to the gorge can buy Gorge and Caves Explorer Tickets which include entry to the two caves, entry to the museum of Prehistory, access to a 3-mile cliff-top walk with Lookout Tower and an open-top bus tour. The open top bus tours operate daily from Easter to September and weekends in February and October. The North side of the gorge is owned by the National Trust and you can download the route of a 4-mile walk along the cliffs or a gentler 1-mile walk from their website.
