National Stone Centre is a site of Special Scientific Interest due to it's geological importance located in Middleton in Derbyshire.

In the Derbyshire Dales, on the outskirts of the Peak District, the site covers 50 acres and contains fossilised tropical reefs and was previously the site of six quarries and four lime kilns and also features more than 120 disused lead mine shafts. There are various trails (guide available for a small charge from the visitor centre) for visitors to explore which take you to the important geological, ecological and industrial points of interest. The Discovery centre has the ‘Story of Stone' exhibition, plus a rock and mineral shop and a Cafe. There is also the Millenium dry stone wall to see plus a Gem panning activity.
