Glenside was the site of the former Beaufort Hospital lunatic asylum that opened in 1861. The hospital has exhibits and displays showing the changes in the treatment of the mentally ill from the 1860s to the late 20th century. It also has information on the treatment of people with learning disabilities and the compulsory detention of 'Inebriates'. Exhibits include drawings, a padded cell, an electric shock therapy machine, instruments and staged scenes including a ward, a sick ward and an operating theatre.
