Helmsley Castle

Helmsley Castle, originally a medieval fortress, is set in the picturesque market town of Helmsley in the North York Moors National Park.

The castle was originally constructed in wood in the early 1100's but converted to stone later that century. It later became a Tudor mansion, then was used as a stronghold during the Civil War and latterly a Victorian ruin. An exhibit, on the ground floor, displays archaeological finds relating to the castle.
