Mottisfont

Mottisfont consists of a historic house with art gallery, riverside gardens and estate located North of Romsey in Hampshire.

Originally a Medieval priory the house was converted to a residence after the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. It was heavily updated during the 18th century and now features a Georgian façade. Some of the things to see in the house include the 13th century vaulted cellarium belonging to the original priory, the painted saloon and leaded windows and herring-bone brick fireplaces from the Tudor period. Free walks and talks daily.

The last owner, Maud Russell, was very much into art and consequently had a large collection of artwork. This has resulted in the formation of the art gallery which displays contemporary and traditional art and items on load from other galleries. There are also a number of artists in residence at the house. The gardens and parts of the over 2000 acre estate have the river Test running through them.

The gardens include two walled gardens including a rose garden, a Winter garden, box-edged parterre, statues, a pleached lime walk, herbaceous borders, a Summer House with Medieval tiles and a hidden ice house. The estate, some of which is part of the New Forest, includes ancient woodland and fisheries.
