Bessie Surtees House

Bessie Surtees House is comprised of two 16th and 17th century merchants' houses, with fine Jacobean architecture and period interiors. They stand on a stretch of Newcastle riverfront used as a quayside since Roman times. It is referred to as Bessie Surtees House since she eloped from the house in 1772 with John Scott, jumping out of a first floor window in the process. John was a coal merchant's son, but he later became a successful lawyer and Lord Chancellor of England.
