Chatsworth House is an attraction that consists of a stately home to view with changing art exhibitions, 105 acres of gardens, the farmyard (with children's activities) and a 1000 acre park.
The house is the ancestral home of the Cavendish family (the duke and duchesses of Devonshire) and has been since the mid 16th century. There are 30 rooms to view containing opulent period furniture and decoration, Egyptian artefacts, textiles plus major works of art including a sculpture gallery. There is a free 15 minute introductory talk about the about the house, full tours of the house are extra.
Some of the highlights of the gardens include the Emperor fountain, the cascade water feature, a huge hedge maze, the Trough waterfall, a kitchen garden, a cottage garden, a sensory garden, a rock garden, streams and ponds and over five miles of walks to take. Free daily garden walking tour. Garden buggy tours cost extra.
The farmyard is aimed at families with children and features lots of farm animals to see, animal talks and handling sessions, plus a woodland adventure playground with climbing forest. There is also a Trailer discovery ride, for an extra fee, which goes between the house and farmyard and gives an introduction to the farmyard and the wider estate.
The 1000 acres of 'Capability' Brown landscaped parkland, alongside the banks of the river Dewent is free to access throughout the year. There are also a number of contemporary works of art dotted around the park.

Places to eat include the fully licensed Carriage House restaurant serving home made food and drinks, the fully-licensed Cavendish Rooms offers full-service contemporary dining including afternoon teas, the Farm Shop Restaurant serves seasonal recipes home made from local produce and the Farmyard Café serves family friendly fare including cakes, snacks and drinks. There are also a few other smaller places to eat and drink including Flora's temple tea shop serving teas, coffees, cakes and snacks, the Chatsworth ice cream van and the Hot pork roll counter.
Dogs on leads welcome in the gardens and park.
