Chillingham Castle is a 12 century fortress with gardens and parkland in Chllingham village in Northumberland.
Only 10 miles from the coast the Castle interiors feature ornamental plasterwork, Gothic windows, huge fire places, period furniture and decoration. Viewable areas include the great hall, the Plaque Room, a chapel, the minstrel's hall, a stone-flagged Medieval courtyard, the Armoury with armour and weapons, dungeons and torture chamber with an Iron Maiden, scold's bridle, thumb screws and an executioners block. There is also a Museum room with photographs and items relating to the family. Some areas not available to be viewed during Winter months.
Formal gardens include an Italian garden with parterres and statues. Capability Brown parkland with lakes and woodland. The herds of wild cattle within an enclosed area inside the parkland (the only wild cattle in the world) can only be viewed when paying an additional fee.
