Hedingham Castle is a Norman keep dating from around 1140 AD and 160 acres of gardens and woodland a few miles North West of Halstead in Essex.
The castle keep has 4 floors connected by a spiral staircase and includes the minstrel’s gallery with original decorative wall carvings and the banqueting room where Henry the VIII and Elizabeth I once dined. There are also displays throughout about the history of the castle. Near the keep is a 4 arch red-brick bridge dating from Tudor times.
The gardens include a dovecote and formal areas with lawns, ponds and a bog garden plus wilderness areas with natural beauty. Events are held regularly throughout the year in the grounds. The village of Castle Hedingham nearby is also a picturesque place to visit with it’s 12th century Church of St Nicholas and a number timber-framed houses.
