The Science and Industry Museum (formerly Museum of Science and Industry) focuses on the science and industrial history of Manchester and the innovations that changed the world.
The attraction is located a few minutes from Manchester city centre on the site of the old Liverpool Road train station (the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station). Visitors can journey from Manchester's past through to the present day across a series of historic buildings and galleries with interactive exhibits.
Highlights include:- The Power Hall: Recently reopened following a major restoration. Step inside to experience the sights and sounds of one of the UK's largest collections of working stationary steam engines.
- The Textiles Gallery: Explore Manchester's heritage as a global leader in cotton and textiles, featuring live demonstrations of historic machinery.
- Revolution Manchester: Discover the iconic objects that define the city's history of innovation, from the 1905 Rolls-Royce to the first computers.
- Experiment!: A dedicated hands-on science gallery where families can explore scientific principles through interactive play.
- Horrible Science: Cosmic Chaos: A major world-premiere exhibition for 2026, taking visitors on a sensory journey through the Solar System (running until January 2027; separate ticket required).
- Admission: Free entry (Advance booking of timed tickets is highly recommended).
- Parking: On-site parking is not available, but there is a car park nearby (charge). Blue Badge parking is available on Lower Byrom Street.
