Liverpool Cathedral is the UK’s largest cathedral and is located in Liverpool city centre.
A relatively modern cathedral, the construction of which began in 1904, this is the UK’s largest cathedral and fifth largest cathedral in the world. Areas of the cathedral include the Nave and central well, the Lady chapel (the oldest part) with a 15th Century statue of the virgin Mary, the octagon shaped chapter house, the Holy Spirit chapel, the children’s chapel, the bell tower and the Educational centre. Some of the things to see include the beautiful stained glass windows, decorative altar screens, marble floors, artwork and decorative architecture. There are guided tours that occur daily at 10am (12pm on Sundays) for a suggested donation of £3.
For an additional charge visitors can go on the Thursday evening Twilight Tower experiences to go up the bell tower. The tower is 500 ft tall and houses the highest church bells in the world and is accessible by lift, then 108 stairs up to the roof section from which panoramic views over the city and river can be enjoyed. On clear days you may be able to see as far as 50 miles away. On the way down from the experience visitors can view the Elizabeth Hoare Gallery which houses a collection of Victorian and Edwardian ecclesiastical embroidery. The experience also includes a 10 minute panoramic HD audio visual presentation, in the theatre, about Liverpool and the cathedral. The cathedral also houses a grand organ and organ recitals are held at regular intervals throughout the year.
