M Shed is a local history museum about Bristol located in Bristol city centre on the historic dockside.
Where the museum now stands was once one, in a series, of alphabetically labelled wharf storage buildings, with the one in it's location called M Shed, hence the museum's name. The structure was redeveloped as part of a multi-million pound development but has been designed to retain a 1950s dockside feel. The exhibits not only fill the indoor galleries, but also feature in the outdoor dockside spaces too. Outside are four electric cranes used on the dockside during the 1950s trading heyday, a steam crane from 1878, two steam locomotives and a number of water vessels including a steam tug from 1861, a 1930s fire boat and a 1930s diesel tug. During the weekends and on special days (not during Winter) some of the boats, trains and cranes are in operation.
The indoor spaces consist of three exhibition galleries and an art gallery with the main 3 galleries telling the history of Bristol from prehistoric times to the present day with interactive displays, artefacts, film and photography and recordings. The social history of Bristol is told via the telling of people's experiences living in Bristol through it's history. Free tours and talks frequently available (see their events page). Family Explorer Kits available for hire. Caters for children's birthday parties.
