Killhope, the North of England lead mining museum is a restored nineteenth century Victorian lead mine in the North Pennines.

The site includes the mine, a working waterwheel with associated building, the 'mineshop' area, the washing floor, the visitor centre, plus woodlands and a reservoir.

The Visitor centre is where the exhibitions are, which includes the 'Penine Jewels' a collection of minerals and a collection of 'Spar boxes' (a type of artwork made from minerals). There are also other pieces of artwork to see dotted around the centre and some in the woodlands.

The 'mineshop' area consists of recreated building including the miner's living quarters, a smithy, a stable and the mine manager's office. Then there's the washing floor where the extracted material would be washed in the buddle pits to extract the pure ore and visitors can get to see this in action and have a go themselves.

The power behind the mine was derived from the water wheel which has also been restored to full working order and can be seen operating. Then you have the mine itself and the guided tour which takes approximately an hour from start to finish. It is very wet in the mine, so you need to wear Wellington boots while down there.

The woodlands have hides where you can watch the native wildlife including red squirrels, plus there is also a children's playground in the woodlands.
