Allen Banks and Staward Gorge offers a breath-taking escape into the largest ancient semi-natural woodland in Northumberland. Managed by the National Trust, this 41-acre estate follows the dramatic curves of the River Allen, creating a steep-sided gorge that is a haven for red squirrels, roe deer, and otters.

Whether you are exploring the ornamental 19th-century "wilderness garden" or trekking to the medieval ruins high above the river, the site offers a unique blend of Victorian landscaping and raw, untamed nature.

  • History & Wildlife: Discover the 14th-century Staward Peel pele tower and look out for the UK’s most northerly dormouse population among the ancient oaks and spring bluebells.
  • Visitor Experience: The site features waymarked trails for all abilities, including the scenic Morralee Tarn route, supported by on-site parking and refurbished facilities.
